- First bare apprehension of an object.
- Stage one of mati-jñāna: 'something is there', prior to any identification.

- Sensory and mental knowledge.
- Arises through the five senses and the mind, in four stages: avagraha, īhā, apāya, dhāraṇā. Classified as parokṣa because it depends on external instruments.
