- Dravyaद्रव्य
- Substance — that which possesses qualities and modes.
- Six in number, eternal and fixed. Defined at 5.38 as guṇa-paryāya-vat.

- Manaḥparyāya-jñānaमनःपर्यायज्ञान
- Direct knowledge of the mental modes of others.
- Two kinds — ṛju-mati and vipula-mati. Arises only in ascetics of high attainment within the human world.

- Paryāyaपर्याय
- Mode — a changing, successive state of a substance.
- The bangle and the ring are modes of gold. Modes arise and perish; the substance endures.

- Pratyakṣaप्रत्यक्ष
- Direct knowledge, arising in the soul without instruments.
- Avadhi, manaḥparyāya and kevala. Note the Jain reversal: sense perception is classed as indirect.
