- Non-soul — everything without consciousness.
- Comprises pudgala, dharma, adharma, ākāśa and (on one view) kāla. Only pudgala has form.

- Astikāyaअस्तिकाय
- An extended substance occupying multiple space-points.
- Five: jīva, pudgala, dharma, adharma, ākāśa. Kāla is excluded.

- Pudgalaपुद्गल
- Matter — the only substance with form.
- Characterised by touch, taste, smell and colour. Exists as atoms and aggregates; constitutes body, speech, mind, breath and karma.
