- Restraint of activity of mind, speech and body.
- Three in number. The negative side of saṃvara: not acting.

- Carefulness in necessary activity.
- Five: walking, speaking, seeking food, handling objects, and disposal. The positive side of saṃvara: acting without harm.

- Stoppage of karmic influx.
- Achieved by gupti, samiti, dharma, anuprekṣā, parīṣaha-jaya and cāritra — and additionally by tapas.
